What Slow Food Emory is about:
Slow Food Emory strives to reconnect students to the soil, water, organisms, cultures, and traditions salient to the production of food and establish sustainable communal interactions. Slow Food Emory seeks to invigorate genuine interest in food policy and production, encourage student involvement with the local sustainable food community, and encourage an appreciation for the importance of food in our daily lives.
Slow Food Emory is a local campus chapter of the international Slow Food Movement. Our main goal is to advocate “Good, Clean, and Fair” food in a way that is adaptable and accessible to Emory students.
How to get involved:
We have general body meetings every other Tuesday at 7:00pm in Few Demo Kitchen. We spread awareness of the Slow Food movement through educational outreach, pairing up with Slow Food Atlanta to do events/fundraisers, volunteering at farms and festivals dedicated to local and organic food, and cooking!
What we are trying to achieve:
Wendell Berry once said that “eating is an agricultural act.” We encourage people to be thoughtful about their food, and realize that what you put into your mouth affects way more than just yourself. We hope that giving people the knowledge to be able to choose between organic and conventional food, the farmers market and the supermarket, fair trade versus standard, pesticide versus natural, etc. will allow them to “vote with their fork” on what values are important to them. Slow Food is not about being a purist. It’s just about doing what you can.
